What is the CEFR?
The CEFR is the Common European Framework and was published by the Council of Europe in 2001. It is a set of guidelines or “can do” statements which learners need to be able to fulfill in order to operate effectively at specific levels. It was created to establish a common basis for language learning across different states and to provide a framework for schools, curricula, examinations, textbooks and syllabus.
It has become the point of reference for other European languages and is often referred to when people describe their proficiency in English. The 6 levels start at Beginner (A1) and finish with Proficiency (C2) building progressively on the “can-do” statements.
